Catalpa Psychotherapy

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” -Carl Rogers

What i do

Individual Therapy Sessions

I am a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) providing individual weekly therapy to adults and older adults in Ridgewood, NY. I specialize in helping clients navigate life transitions, process grief, and develop effective ways to work with stress and change.

My therapeutic approach is gentle and empowering and makes use of humor and metaphor. My work is gender and sexuality affirming and integrates somatic, humanistic, and relational modalities. I have a background in the arts which also deeply informs a collaborative and creative process.

Caregiver Support Groups

In structured, weekly 1-hour sessions, members share knowledge and guidance, create vital bonds, and explore complex feelings related to caregiving. Reach out to find out more about rates and enrollment.

Grief Counseling

I offer weekly grief counseling for adults in NYC.

My approach provides a consistent, supportive space to explore powerful feelings. We build resilience using brave curiosity, often incorporating symbol work and personal ritual creation. Over time together, we can integrate grief and invite healing.

FAQ

General Questions

How do I schedule a session?

Please reach out by using the contact button to schedule a short info call to find out more.

Are sessions available online or in person?

I am based in NYC and work with clients who live in NY state. Sessions are on zoom for the time being, but in person options are in the works.

What is psychotherapy?

How does a session work?

In 45-1hr sessions, clients explore problems that are coming up for them, untangle narratives that have informed their thinking for many years, learn to notice quiet feelings and give them voice, or contain and soothe others that like to take over. I use mindfulness, grounding and art therapy with some clients, home work and check ins with others. Some people are looking for space to explore a certain “stuckness” generally but don’t quite know why. Growth can happen very gradually or in moments of sudden insight. Every client and every session is completely unique!

Do you take insurance at this time? What are your private pay fee options?

I take Aetna and Cigna among other insurances, current list on Headway profile. I will be accepting United Healthcare and Medicare soon. If you are self pay, are underinsured or uninsured, sliding scale fees are negotiable based on ability to pay.

About the practice

What inspired you to become a therapist?

I have always been drawn to helping people tell their stories. I was a theatre artist and teacher in the first part of my life. I focused on creating original work and helping my students create their own plays.

Along the way, mentors and thinkers I encountered modeled the importance of deep listening and support in a life well lived. I saw how powerful it can be to find a safe, comfortable place to tell your story and have it heard by another. This inspired me to commit time and energy to the mysterious, surprising and deeply life affirming process of therapeutic connection.

Where did you study therapy, where are you licensed to practice?

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in NY state.

I got my Masters of Social Work from Silberman School of Social Work.

I trained as a psychiatric social worker in Community Mental Health Agencies with clients all over NYC, mainly focused on grief work and chronic illness issues. I have supported countless NYC artists and arts professionals in moments of change and transition. Often but not always, art making becomes part of the process of discovery and healing.

I have training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Grief Therapy and facilitation of clinical groups.

Clients

What are your typical clients like?

Clients have ranged in age from 25-93! My clients are often dealing with issues of difficult change, adaptation and often loss. I have extensive experience supporting older adults, as well as adults of all ages who work in the entertainment and arts fields.

I am a proud LGBTQIA+ affirming clinician, and feel comfortable working with clients around issues related to gender, identity and sexuality. I work with a racial justice lens and advocate in my work for disability rights and self-determination.
